4S Student Section Annual Report, 2003
Robert Doubleday (4S Student Rep 2001-2003) Stefan Sperling (4S Student Rep 2002-2004) 15 October 2003 During this year, the student section of 4S has continued to build and extend the infrastructure that was put into place at last year's 4S meeting. ACTIVITIES THIS YEAR:
4S Meeting, 2002. There are four events planned for students and junior scholars at this year's 4S meeting. Complementing last year's session on post-doc opportunities in STS, there will be two sessions this year specifically tailored to questions and concerns that scholars typically have at the beginning of their career. First, there will be a panel discussion with opportunity for questions on publishing with focus on issues arising between authors and editors, and on strategic publishing choices. (Thursday 12:15-1:30 ) Second, there will be a similar session on getting grants, with the aim of informing young scholars about funding opportunities in STS and related fields. (Friday 1:30-3:15 ) At the 4S Student Section Business Meeting (Friday 12:15-1:30 ) we will present the work the Student Section has done over past year, we will outline and discuss plans for future work, and we will elect a new student representative as well as new committee members. We will also distribute announcements of current job and funding opportunities. Lastly, following the Banquet on Saturday the Student Section has organized a student party in a pub near the conference site. Details will be announced via the list- serv and at the conference. --- What do we do about the " coorganized with Ed Hacket ?" Website/database. The Student Section has established a website ( www.6s.cc ) with information about the Student Section and with links to projects in progress, to the conference website, and to various other programs. Listserv. The listserv continues to be an exhaustive and much-used resource for distributing and sharing notices on job opportunies , doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships, grants, conferences, and opportunities for publication. The number of subscribers has increased further, from 350 last year to approximately 500 this year, from nearly 30 countries. Many notices circulated there are then posted and made accessible at the Student Section website www.6s.cc . Graduate Scholar Exchange. What happened to grad exchange? How do we frame it? North/South Book Project. Recent issues of the journal 'science studies' that will be shipped to ??? University in Colombia in the near future Links with EASST. Not sure what I think here. I'm not a subscriber to eurograd , so I don't know how great the overlap in fact is. My personal preference, if we do divide competences, is to subscribe each person on the list to both listservs , and leave it up to them to opt out. Next Steps?? |
