Members: Emma Kowal (Chair); Joan Fujimura; Alan Irwin, Vivette Garcia Deister, and Angela Okune.
The committee received five nominations in 2021: Nelly Oudshoorn, Johan Shot, Karen Barad, Michael Fischer, and Knut H. Sørensen.
The work procedure was as follows:
The Chair distributed the 2021 nominee’s documentation to the committee and the list of nominations from past years. The members agreed to add up to two previously nominated scholars to the pool.
One scholar from previous years’ nominations were added to the pool: Judy Wajcman.
The Committee considered many aspects of the scholars’ work including scholarly contributions, disciplinary contributions, and analytic innovations.
The committee noted that in 2020, the Bernal Prize Committee awarded two prizes. We considered that the decision to award two prizes was well received by the membership. Given that the field of STS has substantially grown and continues to grow, there are a great many senior scholars who have made outstanding contributions to the field over many decades. The committee felt it was appropriate to continue to award two prizes.
The committee unanimously decided to award two prizes to Nelly Oudshoorn and Judy Wajcman.
Nelly and Judy enthusiastically accepted their awards and provided statements and photographs.
