Bernal Prize Committee Report, 2019

Members: Noela Invernizzi (Chair); Aadita Chaudhury; Joan Fujimura and Dikoh Chen.

The committee received five nominations in 2019: Chandra Mukerji, Emily Martin, Michael Fisher, Thed van Leeuwen and Joan Fujimura. Given her position as president-elect, Joan withdrew, remaining in the list of nominations for future years.

The work procedure was as follows:
  1. The Chair distributed the 2019 nominee’s documentation to the committee and the list of nominations from past years. The members agreed to add up to two previously nominated scholars to the pool.
  2. Two scholars from previous years’ nominations were added to the pool:  Langdon Winner and Sharon Traweek, each nominated twice.
  3. The committee members then presented two candidates for the final selection, with a brief statement highlighting the merits of the scholars for the Bernal Prize.
  4. All four committee members’ selection included the name of Emily Martin, who was then elected consensually as the 2019 Bernal Prize winner.
  5. The president Kim Fortun was informed of the decision on May 9, and a letter was sent to Emily Martin, who answered it enthusiastically.
  6. A statement was produced by the chair and complemented by the members of the committee and reviewed in its final form by Joan.
  7. The awardee sent her statement and photograph upon request.
