4S Backchannels: Call for Assistant Editors
4S Backchannels is welcoming applications from early-career scholars to join our growing Editorial Team.
4S Backchannels is an integral part of the Society of the Social Studies of Science (4S) organization and community. Our Global North and Global South teams provide a timely outlet for short-format, media-rich, and editor-reviewed scholarly communications. We aim to target a general audience interested in science and technology studies (STS).
We are currently looking to add an Assistant Editor to our Global North team, with the following qualifications:
Training and expertise in Science & Technology Studies (STS) across a broad range of sub-disciplinary approaches
Experience and/or interest in academic publishing and alternative publishing platforms
Ability and desire to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary and international team of 4S Backchannels Editors and contributing scholars
This position is particularly well-suited for emerging scholars (junior faculty, postdoctoral researchers, lecturers, and doctoral students/candidates) looking to develop their academic writing, editing and publishing skills. Alongside the academic and intellectual benefits provided by engagements with a vibrant array of scholarly contributions to the field of STS, this position is also a valuable opportunity to cultivate relationships and build professional networks within and beyond the 4S community.
This part-time position requires the capacity to:
Provide editorial assistance for contributions to 4S Backchannels, working with authors to solicit, receive, edit and revise submissions (approximately 1-2 submissions per month)
Post submissions to the 4S Backchannels online publishing platform (no coding or programming experience required for this user-friendly interface)
Attend monthly Editorial Team meetings (remote)
Attend and/or promote 4S sponsored conferences and events (4S conference fees waived or reduced)
Interested applicants should first familiarize themselves with the 4S Backchannels platform and publications and then submit the following materials:
Brief (1-page) letter of background and interest in the Assistant Editor position
Curriculum Vitae (CV)
Please send application materials and questions regarding the position to Dr. Aaron Gregory, the 4S Backchannels Global North Editor (aaron.gregory@humboldt.edu).
The deadline for applications is: January 28, 2024.
