Design Workbook Variations: Exploring Biosensing Privacy Futures

Jan 30 2023

To interrogate multiple biosensing futures, we were inspired by the 2013 science fiction novel “The Circle” to create a set of design fiction concepts related to biosensing technologies using the design workbook method. These design fictions take the form of images showing imagined interfaces, websites, and advertisements. By creating a workbook of design fictions that explore connections between the novel’s fictional world and present and future realities and imaginaries, we find that these designs open a liminal space between ‘real’ and ‘fictional’ f...

Emotional Interpretation & Materiality of Biosensing

Jan 30 2023

My design research seeks to foreground biosensing’s entanglements with self and others, body and environment, and support human-driven emotional interpretation from within this apparatus. Drawing from approaches such as critical technical practice and critical making, I probe alternative relations and reconfigurations involving humans and biosensing technology.

Feminist Theory Theater

Jan 30 2023

Feminist Theory Theater (FTT) is a way to read. A group of readers assemble as FTT, performing and re-performing a chosen text. Putting the text “on its feet” is not done to create a finished show, but rather as a mode of working, thinking, putting an argument into our bodies and experiencing what it might feel like to stand with it.

Pedal Transcriba, an Ethnographic Device of (and for) Qualitative Research

Jan 30 2023

In this presentation I demonstrate the process of building a USB-based pedal for audio and video transcription with Free and Open Source technologies. The goal is two-fold: first, to show how open prototyping platforms can help us quickly build tools for research in humanities and social sciences; and, second, how the very process of prototyping can be part of an ethnographic project to explore the sociotechnical conditions for participating in collaborative forms of tech development.

Politicizing the scientific self through media interventions

Jan 30 2023

The personal experience of being attacked as a “euro slut”, as bringing “fake facts” and serving “liberal left hegemony” is used here as an analytic blueprint to investigate emotions’ role in the performance of scientific inquiry. Against the background of the Public understanding of Science scholarship. the paper concludes by suggesting that emotions enter fact-making and how this has impact on our means of analysis and public performance of such analysis.

The Empirical Printing Program

Jan 30 2023

Discover the surprisingly aesthetic qualities of marooned everyday objects. In this booth we explore sensibility, inscription and estrangement by having litter turned into empirical prints – unique, artistic monotypes.
